No I have never read his books- he wrote two strories for McCoy's Doctor, Remembrance of the Daleks and Battlefield- not too keen on Battlefield but Remembrance of the Daleks has its moments.

Watched it. Great adventure. I felt a bit sick myself with the build up of radiation sickness. It was a strange feeling. I could see why children (and adults) back in the day would have been traumatized by the show. It certainly builds tension. The Doctor was certainly an irresponsible old bugger. Can't wait to Saturday night again! Six days to go?! Shocked I'tll be worse than waiting for Christmas... Crying or Very sad Oh yes, I did not fail to miss the Thal honey-girl... I estimate she'd be about 75 to 80 now. I wonder if you've got her phone number, Petty? Very Happy

Classic Who for Discussion - Page 3 Empty Re: Classic Who for Discussion

Post by Pettytyrant101 Thu Feb 09, 2012 3:20 pm

Should really make a mention here of the design of the Daleks- for all oneof their appendags is a sink plunger it hit a chord.
The man in charge of Who at the time was firmly against 'any bug-eyed monsters' and was dead set against the Dalek stroy. It was only aired becasue no other story was ready at the time to go straight into production. It was of course the episodes which cemented Doctor Who in the nations mind.
After its obvious popularity the head told Verity Lambert (the Producer and Dalek story advocate) that he would be leaving the direction of the show to her becasue "she clearly knew it better than he did."
Should also give Miss Lambert a shout out here, she was a lone women in a mans BBC given a Producers role (very rare for a women then at the BBC) and she made it the most succesful sci-fi in tv history.
Anyway back to the Dal;eks themselves. I think part of their success is they represent a similar sort of thinking to Nazi's and the kids watching were the post-war generation, if their parents didn't live through it then grandparents certainly did and its was very much still at the forefront of national thinking.
But there is also an added British dimension to Daleks and a warning- you don't get Dalek leaders as such- well you do but most Daleks are basically that most British of things- beurocrats- they migth want to exterminate you but only after a proper plan has been formulated and discussed and all the right boxes ticked on the forms- then they will exterminate you. They reflect something about the WW2 in that- the people who became guards at concentration camps, who handed neighbours over to the SS for acting suspicous ect were not crazy political rulers they were peoples neioghbours, normal unassuming people of the sort you meet everyday- yet capable under the right circumstances of taking part in the most horrendous acts= the Daleks are this to the extreme- the beurocrat elevated to monster.
It also says something for the look of the Daleks that they have basically not changed much over the years- some look roper than others (Tom Bakers Genesis of the Daleks ones look excellent- the much later ones in the McCOy era look terrible- the difference was budget though not design).
The genral shape and outline of a Dalek is ingrained on the British psyche and the voices- which must have seemed futuristic at the time and now sound a bit like an angry Stephen Hawkins nevertheless are grating, unpleasant and harsh and I think especially for children still frightens.

Daleks through the Ages

And the latest incarnations.

And updated vid of an old favourite. The Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy Dalek entry.

Not sure if anyone is still watching! But here's the concluding part to the Daleks story.

And here is a two parter in what is, I should warn you, much ado about nothing, and whilst the nothing aspect can be a bit disappointing the ado bit makes it one of my favourites of the original Doctor (and also therefore reminiscent of the series 5 episode Amy's Choice).

And the conclusion.

Well as I think you are the only other person watching along that could be arranged without much distruption.
For the record though I still consider doing so to be a favour to you and I have noted it in the book of favours owed!

Sometimes, what with life, and reading all the new 'postings' here, you just can't always find a good time to watch even Classic Who... Each time I've thought, okay I'll catch up now, you can bet your bottom dollar I'm feeling absolutely rooted at the time.... Life is a pain (and then you die Very Happy ). Later today, maybe...
