oh goody goody gumdrops! where DO I start!
erm well I like the mooner, and if there is one to denote exasperated irritation with a hint of hysteria bubbling under the surface, I would like that too, but failing that the Hurr one is quite cute. oh and the dancing carrot, and maybe the cheerleader one, and is there one for Loremasters getting their groove on? and an elf vomiting on a cats head would be lovely thank you.

Its Saturday night- its Who night!

Hooooooraaaay!

Not that anyone is bothered it seems (I hate you all! ) but here is the next two episodes.

Well with a complete absense of any responses, not even Orwell (Shame on you putting your family before Who watching- whats the matter with you? Are you a Whovian or a mouse?)

So on the basis that I will flog Who till my last breath, assuming I'm not using it to call for buckie, I have decided the problem is you lot! And some prejudice to anything in black and white.
So I thought I would try something in colour. From the Tom Baker era in fact, the 4th Doctor and one of the most iconic.
Enjoy the Horror of Fang Rock. Proper Who.

Ok seems my attempts to get folks watching some classic Who has taken a temporary set back.
But Norcs recent discovery of Nu Who got me wondering. Part of the fun of Who is having folk to talk to about it afterwards.
So how a bout a 'Watch with Norc" classic Nuwho run.
Each episode of NuWho. Starting at Rose of course. And here's ep 2 of series 5 as well.

So come on- lets discuss the episodee Rose and End of the World- what did you think? Was the threat effective? What about Rose herself-do you like her? What did you think of the directng, lightening, script, sets ect.
Those sorts of things or whatever you want to talk about.

well I watched 'Rose' recently when you posted it, and as you know Rose is my favourite assistant, she is a cheeky cockney shopgirl with a dead end job and not much future apart from marrying Mickey and having babies on the housing estate. But there is more to Rose than a boring banal existence, for a start she is curious and brave, she wants more from life but she doesnt know how to find it, or even what 'it' is. Then the Doctor turns up and suddenly things are getting interesting, but she is torn between her old safe life and this new dangerous life with the Doctor, he promises travel adventure and excitment, what girl could refuse? the ending is quite a relief and gets me every time.

I agree with what you are saying Mrs Figg- but when it comes to her story the fly in the ointmnt for me is Mickey (in my view one of the poorest male characters in Who history). I think they overplay his terror and lack of a desire to do anything else as a contrast to Rose- but by the end of the episode its hard to see what she was ever drawn to in the first place -

Baker and Davidson where the Doctors that I used to know the best. I was living in shared housing then and it was great fun! I've watched the new Who enough to follow the general arc and know the characters, but it's really the most fun when you can watch with a room full of zealots

Im hoping to recreate some of that 'shared pleasure in a thing' here David- watch along with the links and have your say.

Petty I disagree about Mickey. Mickey is the epitome of the classic loser boyfriend that girls and women put up with because he is the best of a bad bunch. Rose stays with him partly out of a sense of responsibility because he is so hopeless, and because she realizes he is at least kind and gentle and cares about her. There is no alternative on the housing estate, she is following the path of her mum Jackie, getting preggers at a young age to a feckless fella, its classic under achievment, but Rose wants more out of life, she is trapped. I think Mickey is her trap, he gradually transforms into something 'more', but i really think he is a great character for the very reason he is so daft. Its real.

Mmm, I just dont find Mickey very real at all. What character development he gets seems forced. I think my main problem is he seems solely to exist as an extension of the Rose character- he's only there to give her some angst about it, he doesn't really have any other purpose or depth outside of that. Whereas say with Rory, he is a fully rounded personality outwith the existence of Amy. (Only bringing them into it as a comparison as there are no other couples in Nuwho to compare with).

And not to be too negative as overall I like Rose, I love the 'standing on the earth' scene where he explains the motion of the earth through space and how he can feel it.Ecclestons does a great job throughout.

I find Rory not only a loser but boring with it. He has no spark, I find him deadly dull.
Mickey is like a bunny in the headlights I think his petty jealousy and clingyness seems real.
Anyway we are set in our opinions about these characters, it will be interesting to know what the others think.

One thing which struck me about the opening episode watching it again was how much the BBC clearly had an eye on an international market- choosing London as a main setting. Every iconic bit of London skyline they can feature they do and there seems to be a plethora of red double decker buses!

I'm afraid it's not practical to watch along. I'm on phone modum at 64K right now. I have to visit my mom or drive down the road and park in the tavern driveway to get wifi.

I agree about Mickey though. I see Mrs Figg's point about him being a loser boyfriend, but the problem is that I feel a bit like I have a loser boyfriend when he's on screen. Reality isn't what I watch Who for. I love Rose though, and it was fun when I was watching a later episode with friends and she suddenly dropped out of nowhere with no explanation. "Who" is almost better watched randomly!

Oooh I feel I really should mention Murray Gold here- that man got a big task being asked to produce the music for Nu WHo.
The original Who theme is a legend- not just as a TV theme but to modern music- as it was the first piece of music ever created entirely synthetically. Its all done on oscillators and by painstakingly cutting up tiny bits of tape and playing them backwards and at different speeds and then splicing it all together-they are also responsible for the iconic sound of the Tardis- the BBC Electronic Workshop is a legend in the business of being pioneeers of electronic sound.
And into these very large shoes stepped Murray Gold. Intrestingly he managed to both do the the complete opposite of the original (Golds version can and is played by a full orchestra) whilst still retaining the originals weirdness and uniquesness, at least I think so. He has done three versions so far, the first for Doctors 9, 10- then one for 10 and finally a new one for 11.
Heres the original from 1963 and the one Murray composed for the 9th Doctor and Who's return.






Shame about the connection David- must need more carrot juice in the engine- regards watching Who out of sequence that rather depends on which Who. Some of Classic Who cannot be watched out of sequence-the 2nd Doctor story War Games covers an entire series. Only series 1-4 of NuWho is more independent- when it was brought back they decided to follow a more US sci-fi TV model, more ST in fact of episodes which were self contained.
Story-arc elements were almost entirely missing from series 1, the Bad Wolf storyarc of the 10th Doctor is dropped into episodes in such a fashion it doesn't interfere with the plot enough (or at all) to effect the stand alone nature of the episodes.
Series 5 the story arc is more developed and prominant, its more a mix of full story-arc episodes and then a stand alone one- series 6 is the same but even more so with the main themes of the overall arc being explored in standalone episodes as well (but are best seen in the context of the overall story arc I think).
