I did play KOTOR a bit back in the day, fantastic game from the little I remember, it would be a very interesting period for the films to explore, but I don't blame Johnson for wanting to do his own thing, I wonder if this new trilogy might explore some of the Force back story The Last Jedi will be introducing?

This may be one of the few times I'll actually avoid reading spoilers. The reviews have been so good, and so insistent about avoiding spoilers that I'll see how long I can hold out.

OK..... so have seen The Last Jedi and not sure how I feel about it all just yet.

So, to start with this doesn't follow the story beats of Empire. When it started I thought it might but that soon changed.
The opening I thought worked well with the resistance on their last legs and the First Order out in force. I still don't know what happened to the rest of the Republic fleet as it wasnt all stationed in the Hosnian system but we don't ever find that out.
When then split time between a few things
One of the key story lines focuses on finding out why Luke went in to exile and what really happened with him and Kylo alongside Rey trying to convince Luke to train her and reconnect with the Force. It also seems that Rey has some kind of connection with Kylo during which they both become convinced they will turn each other to the light/dark. This ends in a mess when Rey confronts Luke, asks him to help again and then goes to find Kylo when Luke says no.
The other story line is following the remains of the resistance as they try to escape the First Order fleet that destroyed the rebel base from The Force Awakens. Turns out they can be tracked in hyperspace and cant get away meaning they are just running until the fuel goes and they get killed. Kylo is involved here to as we see that he indeed didn't pull the trigger to kill his mum.
Various other paths are driven with Finn and his new friend rose, Poe and his problem with seeing the bigger picture and the Hux/Kylo struggling for their bosses love. However, these seem to be distractions from the main points above which we get to the culmination of.
Rey confronts Kylo, he takes her to Snoke and Snoke messes about a bit. While he tortures her a bit and demonstrates his Force powers, Kylo's soft spot for Rey (built during those connection moments from earlier) manifests and instead of executing Rey, he blindsides Snoke and kills him.
The climax of this bit is the two then offering each other a place, which they both promptly refuse. Kylo stays bad and Rey stays good. But at this point I couldnt help wonder what the point in Snoke was as from this point on... he is completely forgotten about!! There was a little bit of Emperor Palpatine music in the background so not sure if that is a clue and not sure if we will see him again, however as of now he just seems like a character for the sake of Kylo needing someone to overthrow. So that is annoying.
We also get some exposition about Rey's parents not being anyone important, however as we find out from Snoke that he was the one that was causing the connection earlier, it is likely this is misinformation.
Back on Luke's island (this takes place at about the same time) we get a visitor from the past. Luke is all angry and about to end the Jedi forever some burning of trees and books, however force Yoda appears and shares some nuggets of wisdom.
Most spectacular part of the film involves the fuel running out, a ship evacuation and then the effects of a capital ship ramming another lump of metal while in hyperspace. Appreciated that one.
Rebels escape to an old rebel base (which turns out was the plan all along which Poe finally realizes and helps him grow up a little bit), snow foxes, First Order launch assault and final act gets in to gear.
Kylo wants to kill everything in the most dramatic way he can. Hux is now his bitch after Snoke dead and some Kylo force choking. Luke turns up to challenge Kylo, Kylo accepts and goes for a duel, stopping the attack while he works out his personal problems.
Snow foxes make their use known as the front door turns out not to be the only way out of the base. Rebels escape while Luke duels. Rey confirms she is a goodie and helps the escape which also includes Leia. Kylo chops Luke in half... only he doesnt as he isnt really there. Luke using some mind games and is actually still on the Jedi Island.
Luke finally happy with himself and force ghosts in to a pile of clothes leaving Leia and Chewie as the last of the original crew.
Resistance in pieces, Kylo confirmed as baddie, Hux his bitch, Snoke....????, Luke gone, Leia alive, Yoda force ghosting about the place.
So.... what did I think about it?
I am really not sure. There seemed to be a lot of story there for not much reason and a lot of story that should have been there that is missing. Maybe that is in some comics or something... but like the missing information that would have been useful in The Force Awakens it really should have been in the film to help things make sense.
Some good bits and some bad bits and I am not sure if it left me satisfied or not. You know that feeling when a film wraps itself up nicely while leaving some fresh questions for the future... well it did the second fine but not the first so I feel a little left in limbo now.
Bottoms up for episode 9 in two years.

yeah, and though I didn't think it was stunning at first the end credits (half the video) show just how much work they put in, and how much work we tend to take for granted when we watch a film.

Well, I thought the Last Jedi was rather shit overall.
Overlong, too many characters doing not much, full of weird/pretensions plot points that didn't lead anywhere and rarely answered the questions Force Awakens posed (though it creates lots more of its own), inconsistent acting (Mark Hamill and Adam Driver were excellent throughout, Daisy Ridley was surprisingly flat compared to her sparky turn in TFA, John Boyega had very little to do) and ill judged humour, the pacing was rather good for the length of the film, but frankly I found it rather boring at times, it felt less like a follow up to TFA and more a weird hybrid of generic marvel action movie and pretentious indy drama, thoroughly confused on where this leaves things for Episode 9...
There's some very interesting visual moments and thematic character material in the film, and I applaud Rain Johnson for expanding the SW universe in weird ways (lots of new interesting creatures), but overall I found it a weird, bloated mess of a movie sinking under the weight of its ideas and runtime

Interesting viewpoint. I thought Daisy was better in this one than TFA. Agree with Mark and Adam though!

Hmm, Daisy had less emotional beats to work through in this film so her performance had less energy and wide eyed wonder (which suits the character arc, I would concede she was a tad wooden in the opening scenes on Jakku in TFA) but it would be fair to say she has improved her techniques and body language.
Finn and Rose's story was very convoluted and ultimately largely pointless not to mention directly leading

I might have a chance to watch it again for free next week, perhaps with my expectations in check I could enjoy more the 2nd time around but I'm not sure I can be bothered to watch it again 
The prequels were bollocks (well ROTS had some great stuff in it I guess) but they didn't annoy me as much as TLJ did...

Other things than annoyed me

- Captain Phasma has even less screentime than in TFA and gets killed in the most anticlimactic way possible
Luke was impulsive, flawed and ill trained but would he actually consider murdering his own nephew even for a brief second? It was a really interesting twist but if he could turn Vader back to the light why couldn't he save a young ill trained Kylo?
Space Poppins Leia What.Da.F*ck.Was.That.
Snoke was such an interesting, imposing character implied to be hugely powerful and he dies in the most stupid way possible.
Finn/Rose romance was cheesy, stupid and robbed Finn of a heroic death and closure to his arc.
Chewbacca seems to have got over Han pretty quickly, how does Rey understand him and BB8 so well?
Surely Poe must have met Rey at some point before she went looking for Luke?
