Several pages (and months) late, but I saw Solo when it was in theatres and thought it was alright, but have no particular desire to revisit it in the foreseeable future. However, on the same trip to the bookstore during which I looked at the Alan Lee illustrations for Beren and Lúthien, I stumbled across a bargain sale of the hardcover of Claudia Gray's Lost Stars, aka my third or fourth favorite story set in the SW universe, depending on how generous I'm feeling about Return of the Jedi. I've squeed about it on here before but the basic concept is that it's a romance story between two people who inadvertently end up on different sides of the Galactic Civil War...

It's spread over a number of years and overlaps with the Original Trilogy at several points, then concludes with an indirect tie-in to Episode VII which I assume was mandated since the book was published as part of the "Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens" meta-series. It's really all about the core relationship and how their lives continue to intersect, though, and I adored it. I borrowed a library copy shortly after seeing TFA, so about three years ago, but I couldn't resist the chance to get my own copy for just a few bucks. I might give it another read if I manage to get my act together when it comes to scheduling my time for this semester.

Ah! I was hoping to find a Star Wars thread!

Well, just from a very brief glance, it would appear that feelings are rather mixed regarding The Last Jedi.

Personally I thought it was pretty good overall. It felt slightly draggy in comparison to The Force Awakens (which was fantastic), but I really enjoyed it. Indeed a couple parts of it even rose to the level of really artful cinema.





I think I have a new fictional character crush! I love Rey!

I've watched it several times on Netflix now. No real complaints here!

I also thought Rogue One was pretty awesome (the ending was kind of tragic though).

I finally got a chance to watch Solo on Netflix too. I thought it was great! I don't know what the hell everyone was complaining about.

The general feeling here is that it was overly derivative.   Nice nostalgic reminder of the Star Wars, but no sense of discovery.

No way! It was perfect! It was a breath of fresh air after the mess Lucas made of the prequel trilogy.

Yes, it hit all of the beats from the first Star Wars, but that familiarity was exactly what was needed to put the franchise back on track. Not to mention that the dialogue was better and the characters a bit more sensible and much less whiny. There were also enough fresh beats to keep things interesting. You know, stuff like a Stormtrooper switching sides...

It had lots of good scenes, but the first half was a bit of a mess, storytelling wise.

Oh, I disagree (of course ). Well, not entirely. There was nothing wrong with the story. It could probably be recut though to pace things a bit better though.

Didn't quite capture Han Solo himself.  Not enough of a rogue.

He was as roguish as he needed to be. The whole point is that it was the beginning of his character arc. He was young, in love, and it showed neatly how he shifted from more of an idealistic character to one hardened by betrayal and his life as a smuggler. It was that idealism which peeked out a bit at times from under his crusty pirate demeanor in the original trilogy. I thought it captured a young Han Solo brilliantly.
