Star Wars [3] Empty Star Wars [3]

Also, for your consideration, Backstroke of the West is probably the most entertaining version of Revenge of the Sith that you could watch. Very Happy It was originally a bootleg Chinese version with really awful English subtitles, but it was fully dubbed into English by fans last year. Their voice for Yoda is ... odd, but otherwise it's pretty great. Nod Though I suppose it might not be as funny if you don't remember what some of the more "iconic" original lines of dialogue are supposed to be.

Only a few minutes in and there's some genuinely funny stuff there. Surprised that the copyright holders allow that to stay up on YT, while the WalkingTacos dub of Bakshi's LOTR was removed.

Only watched about 5 minutes, but damn I needed that. Laughing

I think it would have been funnier with the original dialogue plus subtitles. The scrolling title sequence was pretty great.

But I'm trying to understand how the english subtitles got in there in the first place. Was it dubbed in Chinese, then translated back into English?

I assume that the dialogue must have been machine-translated back and forth but I'm not clear on the exact process behind the original bootleg.

halfwise wrote:I think it would have been funnier with the original dialogue plus subtitles. The scrolling title sequence was pretty great.

I can't find a version of the bootleg with the original audio on YouTube, but if you turn on closed-captioning on the video posted above it'll show you the original dialogue as subtitles.

I've never been able to make heads or tails of how and when YouTube decides to enforce its copyright policies. Shrugging

EDIT: here's a shorter highlights reel version of most of the funny dialogue, but not 2.5 hours long. Razz

Very much like Mark Twain's essay  "The Jumping Frog: in English, then French, then clawed back into a civilized language by Patient, Unremunerated Toil".

The light sabers aren't sputtering anymore, back to the original from Abram's diversion.

I'm liking it, it looks less derivative than the Force Awakens.

We say that after every trailer...

I did enjoy TFA, especially the new characters, but the pacing was all over the place, and the third act/action sequences very derivative, whereas Rogue One had much better action scenes, gorgeous production design/cinematography and an amazing 3rd act, but very clunky pacing and bland characters for the most part, both were very enjoyable well made (on a technical level, less so on script structure) films but rather flawed.

TLJ looks and sounds like it will be moving in new directions, fingers crossed it's less beholden to nostalgia and studio interference this time...

I thought there were a lot of ESB story beats in there actually.

- attack on rebel/resistance base
- training of new jedi/force user
- escape from baddies in Falcon and through small spaces
- confrontation with someone else who then offers to join forces

Hopefully this takes a different spin in the movie.

Hey, I don't say that about every trailer I ever see, though if you meant every Star Wars trailer specifically then I guess I can't argue. Their trailer game is on point. Obviously doesn't mean the finished film will be great but it's still fun to see now, at least for me. Razz

On the other hand, I'm still kinda sceptical of the idea of the Han Solo movie (recently announced to be called Solo, though I preferred the suggestion I saw elsewhere that it be titled Scoundrel), but maybe the trailer will get me hyped. And yes, maybe the movie will let me down too. I consider myself fortunate to be far enough removed from Star Wars fandom these days not to take disappointing entries too hard,* while still having enough affection for the universe to get excited when something looks promising. Smile

*Not that I found TFA or Rogue One to be disappointments per se, though neither was perfect and I think your criticisms of them are pretty fair.

Rogue One needs to be dissembled and put back together, with maybe 5 minutes of pickups added and some scenes pulled back off the cutting room floor. Then it might live up to its potential.  It was so close to being the droids we were looking for.

I'd be curious to see the early version of the film (as reflected in the initial trailers) before the 11th hour reshuffling. Dunno if it was better than the version we got, though. I am glad that the "I rebel" line was absent from the finished film. Razz

I'm one of the few people on the planet who actually liked that line. Rather reminiscent of "whaddya got?" from the Wild Ones.

Rian Johnson must have done a good job with The Last Jedi as he is now developing a sinoff film TRILOGY, and Disney is planning a live action TV series:

Not sure how I feel about this really. Not Johnson doing it but the whole concept of a new trilogy. Without more detail it sounds like 'we want to make more money and Star Wars people seem to like a trilogy... therefore we will be making some new shit up to fit over 3 films.'

Going back to Rogue One... it was so incredibly disjointed in places that it felt like a few different films stuck together. Like halfy said it was almost the droids. There were a few scenes in there that I think we're the best in any Star Wars film.

Han Solo.... not sure if that is of any interest to me at all. Probably wait for reviews or the Blu Ray.

I won't really have a sense of how optimistic to be about this until I've seen The Last Jedi, but the press release mentioned "new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored", which I think is potentially more interesting than yet another Solo-Skywalker story (though I'm still looking forward to TLJ, to be sure). The original characters are great, but it's a big galaxy out there and not everyone has to be related. I'd like to see more of it, even if Rogue One wasn't an entirely successful first effort.

Loved Prisoners and Blade Runner 2049 less keen on Arrival myself, but Villeneuve is one of the best Directors to come through in the last decade i.m.o, he's a got a great eye for visuals and has a run of great critical hits (less so commercially), I'd love to see a man of his talents join the Star wars universe.
