Just for anyone wondering, it is really good. I struggled with getting through AUJ before seeing Pettys edit. I had less problems with DOS, but Petty did a great job there of cutting out anything that doesn't relate to the book story.

The end of DOS is just sublime. You really should consider putting that on Dailymotion Petty, so people can see it without all the chase scenes and everything.

Im not sure, as it was short enough I combined AUJ and DOS into a single film of about 2hours 20 I think.

Not exactly, I had to leave enough in for it to make sense, but its still not good stuff. But the worst excesses are gone and the focus is much, much, more on Bilbo as the lead.

They released a trailer for the DOS EE earlier today, very little Bilbo, but lots of shots of Thorin's Hair...

I kinda feel like, even if you can take out all the extraneous crap from The Hobbit movies, what is left is largely treated as an afterthought in the film itself, so I can't see it really being all that satisfying on its own either.

I'd say cutting out the crap and the padding makes for a better film. Not a good adaptation of the book, but a recognizable one, which PJ's version is not.

I guess I've been so underwhelmed by the Hobbit films that I'd just as soon write the whole thing off and forget about it.  The whole tone is wrong: too "epic", too warlike, too grimdark (relatively speaking of course). One could argue that the tone of LOTR was similarly mangled (I don't think it was as thoroughly wrecked though), but at least there it usually worked on its own terms.

(I edited my post while you were responding.)

I don't remember quite how many lines like the "we're fighters" one there were in the film, but the sentiment behind is pervasive.

Mad

Most of the worst of that sort of dialogue is gone- in fact the round the table scene at Bag End in my edit has no shouting matches, no such outbursts and doesn't continually descend into farcical shouting.
