Lord of the Rings rating? Empty Lord of the Rings rating?

Post by RA Fri Oct 18, 2013 5:10 am

I was just curious about everyone's thoughts on each Jackson film adaptation specifically. What's your own rating if you had to attach a number to it?
I posted this in the other thread, but my own rating for Lotr at least as an adaptation is:
FOTR: 75%
TT: 40%
ROTK: 60%
Just curious about everyone's thoughts bounce

Be back to this shortly RA, I always get confused trying to work things out to really small decimal points....

Not sure exactly how I would rate them, but I suppose my rating would look a lot like yours, RA. Perhaps I'd rate FotR a little higher, and RotK a little lower (as an adaptation, mind, I still love the film). Though I find it hard to rate these films individually, especially Two Towers as it lacks both Shelob and the voice of Saruman, but then again, these are in RotK.

As noted before, my rating would be pretty close to yours, RA. I think your individual movie breakdowns are about right as well as my overall average of about 60%.

Jackson film adaptation - RA

I feel all your ratings are shockingly high given this premise. Those films are at best a paper thin version of the story from the book, with almost all the individual details altered or missing entirely.
Given the question was about the films as adaptations of the books I just dont see how anyone could rate them so highly on that basis.

It's not that high. It's a D. Or for me a 58% so actually technically an F.

ROTK 99%

this is my enjoyment rating, not how accurate they are to the books, although they would be similar.

Seriously, you'd score RotK similar to 99% accurate to the book, despite bearing almost no resemblance to the events, characters or themes of the book its based on?
How do you reason that?

I'm definitely choking on this too.  The green toilet bowl scrubbing dead army bubbles?  Denethor as a crackpot nobody respects from start to finish?  Frodo and Sam splitting up?  Elrond riding in Dunharrow to present Anduril? (that one didn't bother me so much but..) No Rangers riding the Paths of the Dead? No stone of Erech?

Assuredly it didn't muck up the story as much as TT, but 99% is sorely pushing it.

but all those things are largely cosmetic, ie green bubbles, Elrond being cool and all that jazz. Non of those things really damage the story or the flow. Admitedly Denethor is made out to be barking, but he was barking by the flame jump anyway. Paths of the Dead was a missed opportunity, but it didnt really damage the overall story. Not like in AUJ when Bilbo disappears from his own story, its never as bad as that in LOTR.

um, but 99%?? I'll let you go at 90 but even the scrubbing bubbles alone were worth a few percentage points.

What bothered me the most about RotK was when Gandalf got his ass kicked by the Witch King - ruined the whole character (Gandalf, that is). Frodo and Sam splitting up was a pain to watch too, but I can live with it. I should've loved to see the Scouring, however, but I guess one can't have it all (though there was time enough for it, as shown by Petty's edit).

Which reminds me, Pippin lighting the beacon because Denethor refused to?! What stupid ass reason would he have for not calling in his allies? And they showed a shot of him looking sour about the fact it was finally lit. There's simply not a single thing they got right about Denethor, except his name.

But the flame jump is really late into the movie. He's a crazy person the entire movie before that. Razz
For me I know ROTK is a worse adaptation than TT, but TT's treatment of Faramir made it unforgivable to me.

I dont think he is crazy the whole film at all. When we first meet him he is just lofty and forbidding. He is fully in charge of his faculties, he only really loses it when he thinks Faramir is dead. Admitedly he is not Denethor of the book, but I didnt mind his portrayal in the film.

Denethor in the movies never had anybody's respect (even in flashback), and that was just wrong.

I eventually forgave the Coven for Faramir because they at least knew they were changing him and gave a reason, which even if I could only partially agree with at least it was a reason.  But they honestly seemed to think they were providing a realistic portrayal of Denethor, and for me that was unforgivable.

If you have the extended edition there's a flashback to the recapture of Osgiliath, and Boromir says to Faramir "He's here" as if he's some buffoon they both have to put up with.  Given the character they've given him, it really doesn't make much sense that Faramir wants his respect, except that it's what a son wants from his father.
