Good point about the mines- I seem to remember the book is quite claustrophic about them- a lot of darkness and endless tunnels like maggot holes in a carcass.

Back to school always hits hard and this year seems to have been more hectic than most.

Have been watching and thoroughly enjoying Who (seriously worried about Amy and Rory, the Doc made me cry last night.)

The mines really bother me, as you say it was incredibly claustraphobic in the books. That creeping terror of not knowing, like when you are in a forest and scare yourself thinking there is someone watcing and hiding out of sight even when you know you are being ridiculous.

I think the original stone trolls have faces similar to John Howes painting, but the rendering on the Trailer Trolls's faces (!) is deliberately Vague until the film comes out ? Otherwise they've made their faces much like the Cave troll in Jasons beloved Moria fight scene...

The big question is will they talk properly- there was supposed news a while back that they do talk- but in all the actual (admittedly snippet length clips) they only grunt- and if they do talk will they get the full dialogue/- I dont mean line for line I just mean will they come across as intelligent but dumb like the book, or will they be dumb Moria style trolls with only a few grunting words?

Well, Eldo, I just watched the trailer (twice) and what do I feel? Nothing! I got quite excited when you said there was a new trailer out, only to have my expectations crushed after watching it. The trailer is loaded with nonsense and Harry Potter-like changes everywhere! Why add that incredibly lame dialogue between Gandalf and Galadriel? What was wrong with the way Gandalf handled the trolls in the book? Why is Radagast an old crazy bum, or even there in the first place? Where is the humour from the books? Where is Tolkien? Why can't Peter Jackson see that The Hobbit is a great book as it is?

From having been one of the most outspoken Jackson supporters I am now finding myself somewhere in Tolkien-Jackson limbo - I still cannot decide whether Jackson has lost his mind completely, or whether he'll surprise me when the film finally hits the big screen - the trailers just don't excite me in any way. Give me something to drink, will you, Petty?

Aww, sorry to have gotten your hopes, Ringo! I'm glad I'm not the only one who was feeling Harry Potter deja vu though. I agree with a lot of your complaints, but I'm trying to be open to the idea of having fun watching the movie on its own terms. I think it's part of my own evolution from having been a super-strict purist. On the other hand, trying to be open to changes didn't help me when The Last Airbender came out. (Not saying that's a legitimate comparison in terms of quality!)

I still have some measure of hope that this turns out better than King Kong, otherwise I'll be forced to conclude that PJ lost his creative spark sometime in 2004 or 2005. For all my complaints, I'd rather that not be the case.
