You came to the right place. the hurdy-gurdy (english spelling) is a medieval instrument with a set of strings over a hand cranked drum that will strum any string pushed against it by a series of buttons. One or two strings are used as drones, in octaves or fifths. I've actually performed with a hurdy gurdy in the ensemble.

Unfortunately if you search for it you keep coming up with a song called hurdy gurdy man by Donovan. Nowhere close.

Medieval instruments have the best names: hurdy-gurdy, shawm, sackbutt, krumhorn....
