This time they're from Empire magazine, but they appear to be pretty similar to the Entertainment Weekly pics from a week or so ago.

Bilbo's document (which I agree with Petty is most likely the 'contract') is even more absurdly long this time. I don't want it to be a comedy item, but I think Petty is probably right. Evil or Very Mad

Yes it does sadly look more and more like a comedy contract. I guess the writing quality of the script is going to be just as 'high' as it was in LotR's (remember the hilarious bit where Pippin nearly gets a face full of s**t and says "oh that was close", ah how I didn't laugh, especially at how they failed to notice how out of keeping it was with Tolkien who would I suspect rather have gnawn his own hand off that wrist than let it write crap like that). Evil or Very Mad

Just a thought looking at the Bilbo picture. Is the framing of it just a publicity shot or is it an example of things in the foreground v background as a consequnece of it being in 3D? (Which incidentally in a news report on the BBC 3D films are apprently no longer flavour of the month in cinemas and are losing money- is TH to late for the 3-D fad already?)

I've read a number of reports about the declining role of 3D in the United States, though I'm not sure how much it has declined elsewhere. (I'm pretty sure that the so-called "emerging markets" of China and Russia are still going strong with 3D.) However, in the U.S., the percentage of profits attributable to 3D have been slipping so far this year, which has (along with other trends) led many people to say that audiences have gotten over their interest in 3D. On the other hand, some people (notably Michael Bay, director of the Transformers franchise) thinks this is just because the post-production-conversion 3D movies aren't good 3D, and that audiences just need to see good 3D to get excited about it again. I don't know what the situation will be like in a year and a half, but I hope that the 3D movement will continue to slip away, or at the very least fewer theatres will want to fully or mostly convert to 3D. Cool

So it really depends if it's filmed in 3D, or the 3D is simply added later. If they go the whole hog and film the film in 3D, I have no problem. But luckily in the UK 3D is no where near as popular enough to kill of 2D! 2D is still way bigger than 3D I think.

Didn't notice that Empire cover in the shops, maybe it's not out in the UK yet? I buy it quite often, but the one I saw I already have; The Harry Potter special!

It looks so much like LOTR though- I thought that they may have had a happier Gandalf if you know what I mean- he looks pretty grim- but hey, it's only one promo picture!

affraid They look awful. Two on the right just look like humans, at a wake. And the one on the left, is that hair or a hat? Too dark, poor beardiness. Not impressed. If I didn't know what they were I would never have guessed they were dwarves from TH.

My mate pointed out the one on the left looks more like a Ferengi. The one in the middle looks like an illustarion for Rogue from the D&D handbook. And the one on the right just doesn't say Dwarf, he just doesn't look Dwarvish. If I'd been told he was Bard I probably would have thought he looked ok. But not dwarvish at all.

At least the one on the far right has a proper beard! (bets its the Scottish actor under all that?). Still pretty dull looking and not a blue or yellow coloured beard in sight.

More Hobbit pictures | SPOILER THREAD Empty Five dwarfs are we....

Post by springstar Sun Jul 10, 2011 11:13 am

I had to look at these pictures a few times before getting an accurate viewing of the dwarfs. My first impressions of Nori, Dori and Ori were 'What' they look a bit overdone! I now realise that these dwarves are hardy men, who have weathered all types of conditions, wartime, and peace, rain and hail, snow and sunny periods. Wearied from travel and work and the constant rumours abounding about the rise of The Dark Shadow, and rumours about treasures hidden in the mountain.

The thirteen are a rather robust and noisome bunch and probably the costumes we see them in is what befits their personalities. I think the costumes are beautiful and if you look closely you can see the details in the clothes and the accessories. For instance the hats, weapons, belts.

I can see a fashion trend coming out of this movie and what gorgeous silver gray hair the two older men have, even Gloin's hairdo is a surprise. I can almost see Gimli in him. Cool

Yes and as such they appreciate thing like drinking and eating a lot when the chance comes along, having a good sign song and wearing something with a bit of colour to offset all the glooom. It not obligratory that in order to conview to an audicience the hardiness of dwarves you have to dress them in dark colours, make their beards dull as ditch water and give them silly hairstyles- where do these dwarves go in their mountain to get their hair done so fancy? Thats top salon styling there- dont remember mention of the famous Dwarf Hair Salons of Khazad-dum do you? Maybe when they call for Dains assistance its not with fighting its to bring the specialist hair tongs from the Iron Hills! They look silly.

Gloin (if thats him-far right) is the only one thats looks properly Dwarvish to me. People who spend a great deal of time underground mining should not look so styled! Dwarves should have beards you could lose a rabid badger in. They should look like workmen, like hard labourers. People who work hard and play hard. This lot look like they are off to a Hollywood party- if they would look out of place down a mine with a pick in their hand then they don't like like dwarves!!

More Hobbit pictures | SPOILER THREAD Empty Overdressed?

Post by springstar Tue Jul 12, 2011 10:55 am

I do not think so! Ready to party oh yes but an unexpected one at Bag End. I trust Peter's judgment for the type of costume each dwarf gets to wear. These dwarfs were not only workmen they were warriors as well having to defend their terrritory from marauding orcs and goblins.

I am happy in a way that the dwarfs are being portrayed away from the familiar. That the design team would have taken into consideration personalities, size(fat, thin, inbetween, tall, short) age, looks. Not everyone is happy with the photos and not everyone is unhappy with the photos.

I'm not convinced. When the Uk still had a large industrial base in mining you saw miners a lot- even dressed up in a suit for a fancy night out they looked like workmen in a suit. I mean whose styling their hair? Where on the journey to take out Smaug do they stop for a rinse and set? And from what I remember there are no maurding orcs in the mountains Thorin etc have settled in, just mines. And its all too dark looking taking it stricktly as an adaptation.
Descriptions from book.

Dwalin - "..a dwarf with a blue beard tucked into a golden belt, and very bright eyes under his dark-green hood."
Balin- "a very old looking dwarf on the step with a white beard and a scarlet hood."
Kili and Fili- "it was two more dwarves, both with blue hoods, silver belts, and yellow beards; and each of them carried a bag of tools and a spade." (Sound like workman to me!).
Dori, Nori, Oin, Gloin -"very soon two purlpe hoods, a grey hood, a brown hood, and a white hood were hanging on pegs, and off they marched with broad hands stuck in their gold and silver belts.."
Bifor, Bofur and Bombur- "they hung up two yellow hoods and a pale green one".
Thorin -"and also a sky-blue one (hood) with a long silver tassle." (I can't see PJ's Thorin wearing that with the outfit he has here- can you?)

Now the simple question is does the mental imagery conjured up by the book match the imagery PJ is presenting us with? I'd say definetly not. They havent even given them the belts as described, the ones in the picture look like leather with just a fancy buckle at most.

This is shaping up to be TH with all the fun. charm and colour sucked right out of it.
Evil or Very Mad

Before the Quest of Erebor it was said that Thorin gained such wealth as he could, and some of the wandering folk of Durin came to him in the Blue Mountains. Thus they had: '... fair halls, and store of goods, and their days did not seem so hard, though in their songs they spoke ever of the Loney Mountain far away.'

Earlier it was said (Appendix A) that most of the things they forged after first coming to the Ered Luin were of iron, but they prospered after a fashion.

By the way there's a new picture of more Dwarves from the film (Fili and kili).
