Re: Weta Workshop
I'm not surprised they'll be publishing a movie tie-in version of The Hobbit, especially not since there were several tie-in versions of LOTR made 10 years ago. What I don't understand is how HarperCollins can have exclusive worldwide publishing rights to the tie-in when they don't have exclusive worldwide publishing rights to Tolkien's works in the first place. Will countries where Tolkien has other publishers (such as Houghton Mifflin in the United States) simply not see tie-in versions? Or is the press release misleading? Or am I just missing something?

Re: Weta Workshop
Assuming that is Aragorn (and if so I like it in general) but I am not so keen on the pose. I would have gone for him as described in the book when they see him at the Pony. To my eye there is a hint of campness to that pose!

Re: Weta Workshop
i think you are right, if he had been as described in the book, with his legs stretched out in front of him I would now be harbouring a very strong urge to buy one- but as is every time I looked at I would hear a Julian Clary type voice in my head saying, "oooh, get you duckie!"
Not what I want from Aragorn!

Re: Weta Workshop
Yes but does it glow when orcs are near?
'10 years ago when the original prop was made for The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the technology wasn't available to create a grip quite like the one Daniel Falconer designed for Sting. But since then, technology has brought Modern Man just a few inches closer to the skills of the Elven swordsmiths of old.
Peter Lyon therefore proposed an embellishment upon the original prop design.
This is Sting the way the swordsmiths of the lost realm of Gondolin would have made it. Peter took what was a world class hero sword in 2001 and improved it considerably in 2012. '
Wonder if that means it will be slightly different in TH?

I'm suspecting the "technology" Daniel is referring to may be 3D printing, it's the only technology I can think of that has come in (or at least into more mainstream use) since 2001 that would be of any help in developing a sword grip.
For those not aware of how it works, basically it's a machine that prints layers and layers of insoluble and soluble material based on a 3D computer model. The block that is created is then soaked and the soluble material dissolves leaving the object. The object is generally rough, so is sanded before it is used to create a mold that can be used to cast the final object in the desired material.

This Ozhobbit's about as trustworthy as Gollum. I'll be photoshopping screencaps of this site to show Petty declaring his undying love for PJ any day now
Will be very interested to see if any of GDT's style comes through in the prop design...

Stalking? Threats of uncompromising palantir pics that may have been 'enhanced' to reveal a deeper truth?

Re: Weta Workshop
Shouldn't take me too long!
Slightly miffed that you've all assumed I'm a PJ apologist from the get-go
I'll introduce myself properly on the Intro thread but I agree with the majority of what Petty says although I just don't get crabbit about it, too busy getting crabbit about social justice stuff

Well as long as you are crabbit about something that is what counts. You should be at home on the Big Bad Serious Threads though.
