I saw that at the start of each of the three EE theatrical re-releases last month but I'm still not sure what the point of it is. Were they hoping to get the word out about Weta's SFX business to any millionaire studio execs who happened to be in the audience? Suspect

I don't know, but I remember that too. They were just tempting all of those film-making wannabes like myself with dreams of what it would be like working for Weta. What I would give to make chainmail for 6 months!!!!!!!!!!

It's just promotion I reckon. When you go to the cinema you see lots of 'pointless ads'. There's this Audi one where basically this driver? or someone talks about how hard this race is. I mean you can't actually compete in the race, nor do they say anything about tickets (so I'm not sure if it's a real race at all!) with no mention of buying anything! Just promoting the brand.

Fairplay though, it's a very decent video!

I get that they're promoting the brand, but Audi has a very good chance of reaching multiple potential customers per theatre, even though their cars are (I think) expensive. I'm pretty sure that Weta, on the other hand, mainly offers services to film-makers, so the vast majority of people in the audience are going to be unable to purchase services from Weta. Unless the ad was intended to drum up business for Sideshow Weta. Question

Given WETA only started with LotR its amazing how much they have grown- but one has to wonder, with all th eprojects they seem involved in , Rise of the PLanet of Apes, Tintin and The Hobbit whether they can manage all of it at once to the same quality which made their name in the first place.

I think if anything the quality of their work has gone up over time (say what you like about Avatar, but on a technical level the CGI work for the Na'vi and Pandora was better than anything to come before it, even LOTR). I'm sure that they've also grown in size, so I'm not particularly worried about them being overwhelmed. Smile Does anyone know if they're doing non-digital effects (prosthetics, make-up, etc.) for anything other than The Hobbit?

Lovely models. I would have died for those back in my days of collecting D&D lead figures.

Well that's what I was thinking- and pretty unscrupulous if they do- in which case I'm pretty happy with the design. Shocked

Here's some examples of his work. A Dutch artist who Tolkien liked it seemed, and the only illustrater Tolkien bought paintings from. At first glance I took these for east European or slavic art style.

The Orcs Carry off Frodo (and one of them seems to have forgotten their pants! Shocked )

Seems the idea was to do it in the style of a tapestry recording the events. I like them, wasn't sure at first but they have grown on me a lot.

If I recall correctly he wanted to consciously imitate the style of art in the Bayeux Tapestry chronicling the Norman Conquest of England. I agree that it's quite effective, though I think it's somewhat ironic since Tolkien was very negative about the Norman Conquest. Razz

I have the 2011 one and he's the same artist. I like his pictures alot, don't get me wrong, I just liked' the Ted Nasmith ones better. The had a bit more color and it made me happy during the cold, grey winter months. I love how the men are wearing top hats Cool

So, er ... it's a special scarf because of the fabric? Call me a Philistine but that seems a bit pointless; how would anyone even know it's a "Hobbit scarf"? Sure, I have a Harry Potter scarf (homemade Very Happy) but the point of that is the house colours on it.
