That fox is us. metaphorically speaking, imagine you, a person born in the 20th century, passing by one night on your way home from the pub, you stumble upon some sleeping creatures you have no idea why what or who they are, you can not fathom their purpose or where they are going, its beyond your ken, so the fox wonders and wanders off to its burrow non the wiser, all it knows that its seen something strange, and it will never know more unless it follows those sleeping creatures in the morning to the bitter end. But we do follow those creatures in the chilly grey morning, until the sun comes up and warms our bones, to the bitter end.

The fox as reader. Hm...

The fox must have read the opening chapter to The Hobbit though, because it recognizes Frodo and Co. as hobbits.

Hey isn't this tv show like 3 years away still or something?

{{yeah 3 years and this fox conversation is probably going to be closer and more in the spirit of Tolkien than anything they will produce in all that time Mad  Why when no one has told LotR's properly on film yet, or if you are going to have to make up 90% of the dialogue and characters why pick something as dull and as well trodden as Aragorn's story- if folk come to it from the films it wont make sense-are we going to have whiny teenage reluctant Aragorn not wanting to be King? If that's the case why is he doing all the stuff he did do in his youth?- it was all in preparation for being King!!  Mad  And why do a known character at all again? Do Feanor, or Gondolin, Luthien and Beren, the dwarf/orc war, Numenor- there are so many more dramatic and interesting and above all else new tales to tell. Picking Aragorn already shows the production have no ambition and not enough confidence in the material not to tie it directly into characters folk already know.
And it they use PJ as a template it will be even worse, both because nothing fits from PJ's to Tolkien, not the characters or their motivation nor the settings, and because if you build off something that was wrong to start with you will only get further away. }}}

I think they may ignore the PJ template. Sort of like the Star Trek films where things keep morphing - unless they are going to borrow Weta's sets with 3 years of development they will likely wiggle things around to fit the production needs of TV.

They may do a Deadpool 2 and make it meta-go-go. There may be slow-mo flashbacks of Denethor going splat!

Not exactly news in its own right, but there's now an official (verified) Twitter account for Amazon's LOTR series, which made its first tweet yesterday.

I should have realized it would be on Amazon Prime. Smart move. Though I wonder how much money Amazon actually makes off Prime, what with all the rush deliveries.

Prime Subscriptions only make up about 5% of the company's income. Most of the company's actual profits come from Amazon Web Services.

I just read how Bezos' net worth increased by 266 million dollars per day last year. Kind of... I don't know. It's bizarre.

Really? That's amazing, especially given that their web services are only a few years old.

Profits, not, you know, the majority of the company's income. If that makes sense.

I could've sworn further east of Middle Earth looked different. It's been away since I dusted off my copy of Atlas of Middle Earth

I don't remember ever seeing anything beyond the Sea of Rhun. But on this map...I don't think mountain ranges are Tolkien's strong point. Morder was already looking unrealistic, but two sets of Misty Mountains doesn't help.

Neither the official maps nor Fonstad's extended that far east of the Sea of Rhûn. Amazon's map follows the design used for maps in the Jackson movies. Unofficial larger-scale maps of Middle-earth often build upon the design used by MERP--the original tabletop roleplaying game from the '80s and '90s, not the Skyrim mod--which went in a much different direction.

cheers it's been about 3 years, but I come back to you all now, at the turn of tide. Very Happy I've been meaning to get back into Middle Earth and I've done so slowly and it got me thinking about this place again.

Ahh, Merp. It's such a pity what happened to that project. Instead we get those Assassin's Creed clones.
