I'm too tired to say anything coherent, I think. Other than I think I thought it could be decent at one point, but then it took a bit of an odd turn and went on to finish almost before I realized.. err.. it had finished.
Some of the facepalm moments are easier to weather when you expect them, I guess.

I thought the choir was great ! And adding costumes was a nice touch.
Im amazed in myself, Ive lost more interest in TBOT5A than I thought

So does Martin Freeman do this with every project he's part of or just The Hobbit? He always seemed happier during the Sherlock behind-the-scenes stuff I've seen, but I don't watch nearly as much of that as I do for TH.

That's a pretty poor excuse for a review, isn't it.
I'm sorry guys, I've just been busy with exams and stuff. Noone impressed I went to the premier?
It was kind of a rush out the door, and a bit of a blur of an experience. Which is probably why my thoughts on the film itself are a bit muddled. I kind of lucked into a ticket. I was a bit bored with exam reading so went online to see if there were any last minute tickets available like last year, as I figured I wouldn't get that many things done betwen 23.59 and 02.00 anyway. And there was a ticket available for the big screen premier in Oslo. You know, the one peope camp out for weeks to go to. And I found this ticket two hours before the screening. So I jumped on it..
And, yeah, it was fun to go to just as an event. And it was the first of the Middle Earth movie premier I've been to. Actually, they were handing out diplomas to the first people in line before the movie started, who had camped out for 16 days to get tickets. And, sure, they had better seats than me, but it did leave me feeling a bit embarased at having snuck in at the last minute with the minimum amount of effort..
Anything more on the movie itself might be a bit longer. Though if anyone has any questions.. or maybe I'll find time to write something over the weekend, who knows.

Congrats on scoring tickets to the Fjoridian premiere, Blue! That looks like a lot of fun. I'll most likely be seeing the film on Wednesday afternoon next week, which is officially opening day for the US, but is actually the third day that the movie will be playing here. I'd go on Tuesday night, but I have work at 7 AM on Wednesday. I want to make sure I have time to write a big long review/impressions post afterwards, too.

Saw it last night, this isn't a review per se just my initial thoughts
All in all, a perfectly suitable conclusion to this trilogy (whether that it is a good or bad thing I'll leave up to you)
- SPOILERS:
- Overall I'd give it a 6(?), defintely felt like a more competent film than the last one, Martin Freeman, Ken Stott, Luke Evans and Lee Pace are all great, the opening 10 minutes with Smaug came across as really anticlimatic and bolted on to the film (rather badly edited imo as well), Legolas' stunts, bad quips and exposition elf dialogue reach a new height in this film, he bloody jogs up a collapsing tower in slow motion (you'd have thought after being shoehorned into two more films he'd have some sort of character growth...but no), and has more screentime then most of the Dwarves.
Most of the 'filler' dwarves don't get a single line, Dain is rather cool (in a Peter Jackson over the top way) and gets a few decent one liners, but the rumoured CGI is true-he looks odd, the Actual battle scene is staged quite well-it's a series of maneuvers and engagements rolled into one, but with the CGI it quickly became boring to me and carried very little weight. Richard Armitage's Thorin finally bit the dust the beardless bugger!!
All the usual Jacksonisms are on full display-random slow motion, odd jump cutting, overlong fight scenes, bad one liners, but it does come across as more competently put together this time.
It's odd to say this about a PJ film, but it feels rushed, it's pretty clear where cuts were made, and the battle scenes and climax jump around far too often to get a good hold on things.
Although Ryan Gage is a rather good actor, Alfrid has rather too much screentime and PJ's humour seems out of place in the film.
Doggle Door is kinda cool, but makes little sense and is over surprisingly quickly for all the hype
It ties in with Fellowship in a rather nice way
The Ravenhill battle with Thorin and Co against Azog is staged pretty well, but sidelines the main battle almost entirely.
Tauriel/Kili romance is hillariously bad, we are somehow meant to Believe she has fallen in love with a hairy shortarse she has 'known' for a matter of days and had extremely limited conversation with, completelty ruins Tauriel's redeeming features and makes her seem like a spoiled teenager.
Legolas and Bard have a conversation after the destruction of Laketown, I don't know why it stuck out, but Bloom looks really weird in these scenes.
The music is once again very subtle and not very memorable imo.
Couldn't be arsed to sit through the credits so I have no idea if there were any surprises.

The Eagles turn up at the last minute and apparently save the day-It's quite clear the orcs outnumber the good guys by a large factor, but after Azog is killed the battle just seems to end, it's not clear how it was won!
The Bilbo/Thorin relationship is handled really really well in this, there is a small addition to the auction scene related to this that improves on the book imo.
Bain's age and appearance change noticeably at points from DOS
Lots of dumb plot holes.
All in all, a perfectly suitable conclusion to this trilogy (whether that it is a good or bad thing I'll leave up to you)

- Going by what you said Malick, ( & a good view point I thought ) I would not go to see this film at all, if it was just any old film. Id most likely catch it on dvd or TV. If this wasnt a book I enjoy, written by a man I respect, Id certainly give it a miss. Theres nothing here that interests me enough.

Well, whatever people think about this bileology, we can all catch up every Christmas or Easter, as here (UK) The LOTRs films are bunged on quite often now, usually around Holidays, so youll never be free......... Mmwoar ha ha !
