Re: All things sporting [3]
Yeah, kickoffs are the worst with commercial breaks. Watching the edited down versions of the games that they sometimes air on NFL Network with all the pauses taken out is often more engaging. But there's something to be said for the watching live experience too.
The game was like this even before television though.

It's actually better for an event then something like soccor (what everyone else calls football) that plays straight through. Plenty of time to refill on beer, even run out for snacks without missing much.

True. And of course there's downtime during soccer games, especially after goals, despite the clock still running. But it's harder to predict when and for how long the breaks will happen, which makes it harder to take a tactically-scheduled break.

{{{Glasgow Rangers drawn against Glasgow Celtic in the Scottish Cup- first Old Firm Derby match they have played in a long time- should be quite spectacular- might even be a game of football in there too }}}}

Looks like Spurs finally dropped our of the Premier League title race.

Re: All things sporting [3]
I don't follow the Premier League but I heard about Leicester City's run recently and it's a really cool story.
Re: All things sporting [3]
It isn't the stuff of fiction any more. We had the literal last second league win with Man City a few seasons back and now we have a couple of stories with Leicester that were consigned to chick flicks and teen fiction before now.
Re: All things sporting [3]
{{To follow up on that Old Firm game- Rangers (my team)
But first they won div 4, then the chancers and crims got found out again and there was another takeover, then they won Div 3, then this season 2 marking, next season, their return to the Scottish Premier League.
And on the way we got to face
Heres the highlights of the first Old Firm derby in years, and two of the worlds greatest footballing rivals go at it- the thing that makes them so good is the atmosphere is unbelievably intense, so much so Celtic had to take a foreign player off early on, not for injury, or tactics but for essentially shell-shock, he just never got started and was wandering the park lost- its makes for high drama because it gets to the players they make mistakes they normally wouldn't, and rise higher than they normally would- so enjoy what was a hugely entertaining game of football but nervewracking as fuck (

Re: All things sporting [3]
I remember hearing you talk about the near dissolution of the Rangers four years ago. Glad that they're finally on their way back to the Premiership!
Re: All things sporting [3]
{{{Here's a vid taken from inside the Rangers end for the penalty shootout- it gives a flavour of the intensity of the occasion, (and the sort of sectarian comments you still commonly hear-even after the anti-sectarian laws have been in force for some time), but it cant convey the sheer wall of noise you experience in the ground with 50,000 alternatively cheering and jeering fans around you (note that long Scottish memory- the song towards the end referencing King James is a pro-protestant anti-catholic flavoured one relating events from the 1500's, songs celebrating King Billy -William of Orange 1689- are also popular in the Rangers end- you will also hear the derogatory term for a catholic- fenian- a lot, just to warn you)}}}}

Re: All things sporting [3]
Watched both Euro and Copa América games today. Holy shit at Chile 7-0 Mexico. Here I was thinking it might be competitive with the reigning champions of both South and North America facing off.
