Computer Game Music You grew up With

Just listening to a piece of music from a Final Fantasy game and then decided to have a journey through my computer gaming life.

Here are a handful - last 2 are covers of the originals.

I think the music in a lot of these games triggers a lot my reminiscing than the games themselves!

On a related note, I recently downloaded an emulator for my phone, and I'm now working my way through Pokemon Yellow. Lots of memories.

Those two games were my first thought when I read the topic title   Still got the original blue version. God, I loved playing those games

For me game music was largely one hugely influential composer- David Whittaker.
From the sinclair spectrum through to the commodore Amiga and to the eventual arrival of the consoles he was the sound of games for me.
His ability to turn the limited beeps of early computers like the spectrum, commodore and ST into weird haunting other-worldy atmospheres is unsurpassed and his place in influencing the later music that a generation who grew up playing games with his tunes would make, is sadly not given enough credit in my view.

And not Whitakker, but an honourable mention, the theme from Agony on the Amiga- I used to leave this tune playing for hours in the background! (its surprisingly calming)

That last one is quite good for Amiga era music. I always liked the music from wonder boy 3. For midi I always thought it had a lot of depth (obviously not when I was 6 years old... but when I got older).

The final fantasy music I have always thought was amazing. So many great pieces.

An early example of how to use samples well in a very limited amount of memory space Agony.

The Amiga of course was famous in its day for its music capabilities relative to other machines of the day. Especially its sound chips and its midi compatibilities (something started with the rival Atari ST if I remember right) and probably without these machines and their early pioneers the Euro techno scene would never have emerged when it did.
In fact the Amiga is still a hugely popular machine in Germany today and there are vids on youtube showing people still using the latest versions of the Amiga operating system today in preference to windows.

The other thing the Amiga had were hackers! Game hackers, rival groups that were fiercely competitive, not just in hacking games but in presenting them- so intro scenes before the game started showcasing the teams graphical and musical skills became the norm and were often better than anything seen in commercial games of the time.
As a consequence many of those hackers ended up in the games business, and some of those old groups, such as Razor, Skidrow ect are still going strong and hacking games to this day and putting them up as torrentz now.

My son nominates DOOM, Silent Hill, & good old Medievil

Listening to this makes me want to play World of Warcraft again, but then I remember they ruined everything that was fun about it It was a fantastic game, despite what the media and besserwissers in the world would have you believe. Never had so much fun playing a game. I think a lot of the fun came from the fact that we were a group of friends playing, and would do most stuff together. It was easy to get lost in it, though, there's no denying that. Anyway, the music is great

I've always loved the "Hell March" music from Command & Conquer: Red Alert.

Why didn't I think of that one?!?!?

What more could you want in a soundtrack to blowing the fuck out of the allies with 25 mammoth tanks and MiG air support?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Reminded me of another game, Total Annihilation, which I think was by far the best RTS strategy game of it's time.... yes ahead of Command and Conquer, Metal Fatigue and all the others that were about at the time.

The soundtrack to this game was dynamic (music changed when your units engaged enemies) and was the first time I had heard this sort of music in a game.



Worth skipping through to a few of the different tracks to hear how different some are... but all orchestral.

I can't say I grew up with this song, since I only heard it for the first time a couple of days ago in a YouTube video my stepmom showed me, but it turns out to be from Need for Speed Underground 2. I loved the first Underground, but if this song is any indication, the sequel had much better music. A pretty great remix IMO.

Have to say I prefer the original - that to me is like having an annoying mate in the room who keeps making up his own lyrics when your trying to listen to a tune.
If I was in the same room as him I'd be saying, "Gonnae shut the fuck up mate. I'm trying to listen to the Doors."   

Plus bit of a cheek to use a remix of a classic Doors tune to name drop yourself. Americans and modesty- two words that dont tend to meet each other to often in the same sentence unless its an American worrying unnecessarily about sex.   

That's sort of the point of remixes though. The original song is a classic, of course.
