I plan on reading Dune again before seeing the new film. It's been a while since I've read it, but I've been "calling for"
a film remake for a while now.

As of today I've only read Dune, but as I also plan to read beyond it, is there anything I should know about with respect to canon?

I've head whisperings Wink

Only Frank Herbert is canon! Evil or Very Mad

I tried reading dune once about 10-12 years ago...couldn't get into it and gave up after a few pages. I've long meant to give it another go, now that I'm older (and possibly wiser Suspect scratch study ) and read more genre fiction, keeping this Tolkien related I'll also point out that I read and thoroughly enjoyed The Silmarillion when I was 16/17 and didn't find that dense or hard to follow at all...

To answer the question of what I consider 'canon' regarding Tolkien's writing is hard to say, Tolkien's own views and thoughts on his writing changed greatly over time, and the shape and structure of the published Silmarillion is probably not all that close to the one he had envisioned...should we really consider it canon, if the author had never firmly decided on its final structure and content?

Outside of The Lord Of The Rings I suppose I view his Middle-earth writings in a more broad and general sense, each early or alternate draft and abandoned/unpublished idea is equally canon in its own corner of the middle-earth universe, the inconsistencies between books and the sprawling development of the stories just add to the charm i.m.o
