The Houghton Mifflin Deluxe 2004 50th anniversary one volume hard cover is very neat especially.

Agreed. I have that copy and it's incredibly gorgeous. I don't use it for reference or take it on trips since it's expensive as hell and I'd like to keep it in good condition, but it's a joy to read.

I'd love to get the three-volume Alan Lee illustrated set as well but there's only so much money I can justify spending on copies of the same book.

I got that one the One volume Centenary edition. Though I usually don't bring them on trips either. I have a beat up Ballantine Eleventh edition I always bring.
The spine of the Return of the King from that set is broken and I had to tape the spine to stop the appendices from falling off.

Intresting to note the covers- some are good and some are truelly appaling.

I still have my original trade paperback versions that I got when I was nine (the Ballantine/Del Rey ninth edition, apparently, with movie tie-in covers for LOTR included as a box set with The Hobbit), but they're not in great condition. A long time ago I left The Two Towers in the car on a hot day and the cheap glue binding melted so there's a substantial portion of the middle of the book that is not attached to the spine anymore and will fall out if I'm not careful. :/
