Amazon, Warner Bros in Talks for LOTR Series Adaptation: Variety

A review by someone who doesn't really seem to know Tolkien.  Liked it, but felt Galadriel and Elrond were miscast since they don't project the gravitas we've come to expect from Cate Blanchett and Hugo Weaving.  Saw that coming a year ago.

Of all the breathless reviews out there by folks who obviously can't tell Tolkien from Frank Miller, the most scathing review is from someone who actually DOES know Tolkien (best line: "I was rooting for the orcs"):

Nerd of the Rings liked it, though keep in mind he also awarded 10/10 to PJ's LotR and 6/10 to the Hobbit.  More interestingly he brought a group of friends to the premier with varying amounts of Tolkien exposure, and their ratings of RoP ranged from 6 to 9.5, average 8.  He didn't break it down by exposure.  I kept falling asleep during this review, and had to watch it 3 times to make it through - it's after lunch but perhaps that hints at the lack of insights here.

How anyone can write such egregious lies is beyond me.

The man must have had zero influence over the show then.

I continue to be amazed that they care so much about the language and so little about anything else.

They fuck up the language as well.
This "speaking in Elvish" thing is a party trick, nothing more.

It turns out that Netflix offered a similar amount of money to the Tolkien estate for the rights, but lost out because they wanted to do a multiple series approach, not unlike Star Wars.

Since I haven't seen anything by Amazon except the trash RoP, and have liked much of what Netflix has done, I think we may have missed out here. Netflix still doesn't have the credibility of HBO, but anything would be better than what has been inflicted on us by Amazon.
