80 years, the time between Bilbo's and Frodo's big journeys.

{{That does give some perspective Halfy on how long it would have felt- Bilbo's stories would be old mans news by Frodo's day. No wonder half the folks in Hobbiton dont believe a word of it! }}}

On the other hand 80 was considered young for a hobbit, they lived for a century more often than not, Bilbo's story would already be ludicrous and hard to believe at the time even without 80 years of rumours and hearsay, though the myths about Bag End being filled of jewels and gold didn't subside...

{{ True but Bilbo was already in his 50's when he was off adventuring, so there probably wouldn't be too many of his generation still on the go by Frodo's day. Even with longer hobbit lifespans. One of the few others from that generation we get to know is the Gaffer, and by the time of Frodo's day he is held in esteem for his age and homespun hobbit 'wisdom' (and quickly dismissed by some of the younger generation for it too who prefer the more scandalous versions of events like the tunnels being stuffed with jools!). So I think by Frodo's time even to hobbits Bilbo's tales would seem to be from a distant time. }}
