I always loved Tolkien's introduction to Bree, and consider it a pre-eminent example of the writer's craft. Every now and then I try to study it to discover what makes it tick; but I can never make myself pause and dissect it: by the second sentence it sweeps me along in its magic and I'm deposited at the far end having learned nothing.

{{{There is some particular juxtaposition in that chapter which always tickles me its so well done.
Bree is to the reader basically a rather nice town- rather lovely, and the Prancing Pony a good, well run orderly inn recommended no less by Bombadil and frequented by Gandalf.
But to the hobbits its all quite daunting, unfamiliar, a bit alien, and to Sam especially full of hidden dangers.
And Tolkien manages to work both of these viewpoints into his writing- giving us the reaction of the hobbits to the place whilst simultaneously pointing out its quite nice to familiar eyes.

Another clever trick is they arrive when its getting dark and pissing down and an unknown figure follows them in- so there is a sense right from the off that whilst Bree might seem a nice enough place there might be real peril lurking too. Its the perfect set up for the balance of the chapter- Bree is a nice place most of the time, the Pony is a good inn, Barliman a good man- but shit still hits the fan whilst they are staying there anyway- all of which is implied in their arrival there and the manner of it. Tokien sets it up a peach }}}

He knows what he is doing, he probably knew way far ahead how this set up in his writing would go. Nothing is ever just black & white, even in our lives we may go somewhere we've not been to before & feel that niggle of unfamiliarity yet, all the farmers & locals fit right in & don't bat an eyelid A roaring log fire always helps I feel Itsa cosy & homely & you can settle in quite quickly
.....shame PJ didn't know what he was doing or, we'd have a different film. I do love the World PJ created visually its just he missed a few vital points in getting the story right..........
And now I feel frustrated ! I cant believe how he could have f**ked up "The Hobbit" as much & as badly as he did !!! ( PJ that is ! )

Did the Numenorians beat Mordor? How did the brothers get on after their dad was killed? Where did the Elveses go after the battle? Did some progeny after 30-40 generations rise up from the shadows to be King again using a broken sword and a half-forgotten race of miniatures??
