I've just been watching a lot of Yu Yu Hakusho and was wondering if you guys have an anime you're fond of and why.

I think Yu Yu Hakusho is my favorite. Excellent pacing, no filler, great characters. Some of the one-liners in this show are perfect, Yususke's "Kuwabara!" yell comes to mind. The soundtrack fits the mood really well. Overall it's just great.

Most of the episodes are on youtube. The pilot episode really sets the tone and and grabs the viewer's attention.

I had no idea you were an anime-watcher, RA. Very Happy

I've only seen a little bit of YuYu myself. It was pretty good, though in terms of fighting shonen, Hajime no Ippo (aka "The Fighting") is my personal favorite. It's about boxing and has no supernatural elements, but it shares a lot of similar tropes and is really solid on all levels, IMO. An overall favorite series is hard to pick, but Cowboy Bebop (the first series I finished) and Gurren Lagann (though I don't think it's for the same reasons as some of its fans) are often in the top two or so.

I used to watch Toonami back in the day when they showed Dragonball, Rurouni Kenshin, Yu Yu Hakusho and a few others  Smile . I also really liked the Steinsgate sub and the One Piece dub.
My friends have been trying to get me to watch Gurren Lagann; I will... eventually. I'm just busy rewatching Yu Yu Hakusho for the third time  Razz

Those were good but I like his darker ones better. In addition to HMC, Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away.

I appreciate you bringing up Ghibli movies, Radaghast! They have such a phenomenal catalog, and I've been revisiting it in preparation for seeing The Wind Rises. I've re-watched a couple of Takahata films, and I want to go through Miyazaki's entire filmography before seeing his latest. I also watched his son's most recent film, From Up on Poppy Hill, which was actually pretty good. There are only a handful of Ghibli movies made by the younger generation, but a lot of their animators have gone off to direct elsewhere. Some of my favorites from that group include Mamoru Hosoda's The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Kitarou Kosaka's Nasu: Summer in Andalusia.

His son got into the industry at a relatively late age; he's only directed two films so far. Skip his first film (Tales from Earthsea), though. It's been disavowed by everyone from Ursula K. LeGuin (author of the Earthsea books) to Miyazaki the Elder himself.

Interesting. I've never read a word of LeGuin, though, so maybe I'd be neutral about it. Seems to have a halfway rating on IMDb.com. In any case, I'll check out the other movie first.

I find that I enjoy the lighter ones more (but Spirited Away is great). I get the same happy feelings that I get from early Disney, like Pinnochio.

Pinocchio is my favorite of old Disney though I find it to be darker in tone than any other Disney animated movie.

I still haven't gotten around to seeing Castle in the Sky.  I was saving it up for my big Miyazaki Marathon that I was planning for when The Wind Rises was released in the US, but I never got around to it (though I did see Wind with subtitles at an arthouse theatre in Baltimore, which was nice, even though I had some reservations about the film).

Much as I love many of the Miyazaki films I've seen, though, I think it's kind of a shame that he has so completely eclipsed other anime directors in mainstream American eyes.  Not that any anime directors were really getting a lot of mainstream attention before Miyazaki became famous over here, but still.  Even the co-founder of Studio Ghibli, Isao Takahata, tends to get ignored.  Although Takahata's latest (and probably last) film just came out in limited release, so hopefully that will attract some eyes. Smile

I think it's the same in the UK, Anime doesn't get alot of exposure here and are rarely shown on popular tv channels, I only started watching Ghibli' stuff because I heard it had one lots of awards (rightfully so), it's not that I don't like the genre, but it's too expensive and time consuming trying to track down anything, when I'm not sure if I'd actually enjoy all that much. I think the weakest of Ghibli's stuff I've seen is Arriety, charming to look out, but a very forgettable riff on Thumbelina and not quite as daring as I'd come to expect from them.

Sad to see Myazaki is retiring...again!

Well I watch most of my anime online for the cost reason, though I do subscribe to a couple of legit streaming services and I buy copies I really like on DVD to try and do my part to support the industry. Razz

Out of curiosity, have you seen any of Ghibli's non-supernatural stuff? They have a number of movies that take place in the real world without the fairy tale elements (not that I have anything against fairy tale movies), but they don't seem to get as much attention.

Also, they have a thing for adapting British children's literature. Arriety was based off of The Borrowers, Howl's Moving Castle off the book of the same name, and Miyazaki's son famously made an Earthsea movie that Ursula K. Le Guin hated (although she's not British...).

I don't think there's a box set, but if you ever get the chance, check out Whisper of the Heart.  It's probably my favorite anime movie, period.  It was written by Miyazaki and directed by his protege, Yoshifumi Kondo, and was the only film Kondo directed before his premature death from overwork (which is considered to be the reason for Miyazaki's first retirement).  Only Yesterday is also a fantastic movie, though much further from the Ghibli norm than Whisper.  Unfortunately I don't think it's had a Western home video release, though, so you'd have to watch it by less savory methods. Actually, nope, it seems to be available on Amazon.co.uk, so I guess it's just the US that is missing out on this gem.
